Notes

'Mephisto' tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa 'Mephisto') is a shrub for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Purple-red semi-double flowers have long, narrow, near black flares on curved, velvety petals. It blooms in late spring on strong, tall plants with purple-tinted green foliage. Michel Rivière bred it, and the flowers have no fragrance.

Pairs well with Endless Summer hydrangea, Cinnamon fern, and The President clematis.
