'Nigra Compacta' oriental spruce (Picea orientalis 'Nigra Compacta') is a tree for specimen, accent, privacy screen, and winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to moist soil. It grows slowly into a dense evergreen that reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Deer and rabbits usually look elsewhere for a meal.
