Pine (Pinus jeffreyi) is a tree for winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Crushed bark and twigs smell like lemon or vanilla. It sits low on the menu for deer. This slow-growing evergreen does best planted in a grove with other pines or oaks.
