Notes

'Pioneer' peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Pioneer') is a perennial for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Alonzo B. Franklin bred it in 1942. The semi-double deep red blooms show their stamens and open in early spring, among the first peonies to flower. Strong stems hold the flowers above dark green foliage.

Pairs well with Dog's tooth violet, Sedge, and Black Hero tulip.
