Notes

'Red Beauty' painted lady fern (Athyrium niponicum 'Red Beauty') is a fern for shade gardens, borders, and ground cover. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows 12 to 18 inches tall and wide with an arching habit. It is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, though hungry ones will eat almost anything. It does not flower, so you grow it for its foliage.

Pairs well with White Feather hosta, Red trillium, and Western sword fern.
