Notes

'Regal Red' painted lady fern (Athyrium niponicum 'Regal Red') is a fern for borders, shade gardens, and rock gardens, and it needs little care. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Deer and rabbits rarely make it their first choice. Its fronds show the best color in light shade. This fern is deciduous but goes dormant later than other varieties.

Pairs well with Lenten rose, First Frost hosta, Roma greater masterwort, and Excelsior Spanish bluebell.
