Notes

Shrubby St. John's wort (Hypericum prolificum) is a shrub for borders, hedges, and rain gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Deer tend to pass it by. Large yellow flowers open from early to late summer and draw butterflies and bees. Red to purple bark peels in strips, and seed capsules last all winter.

Pairs well with New Jersey tea, Switchgrass, and Purple Coneflower coneflower.

Native range

Central and eastern North America.
