Notes

St. John's wort (Hypericum calycinum) is a shrub for borders, rock gardens, and ground cover. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist soil of most types. It is evergreen and drought tolerant, so it needs little care. Bright yellow flowers open in early to late summer and attract butterflies. It grows fast and spreads low and wide.

Pairs well with Karl Foerster feather reed grass, Prairie dropseed, Greig's tulip, and Blazing star.

Native range

Southern Europe and southwestern Asia.
