Notes

'Smaragd' American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd') is a shrub for hedges, privacy screens, specimen planting, and foundation beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 2, or down to -50°F (-46°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist soil of most types. It grows slowly into a dense, fragrant evergreen that offers winter interest. Deer tend to pass it by. Give it room to reach 12 to 14 feet tall, and birds will visit it.

Pairs well with Rock soapwort, Blue Moon honeyberry, and Red fescue.
