Notes
'Smhmldd' bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Smhmldd') is a shrub for cut flowers, cottage gardens, shade gardens, and foundation plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows at a rapid rate to 24 to 36 inches tall and wide, and it is salt tolerant. Pink to blue flowers with red fertile flowers appear from early to late summer. Deer rarely make it their first choice.
Pairs well with Golden Tiara hosta, Autumn fern, and Aureola Japanese forest grass.
