Notes

'Spartan' apple (Malus domestica 'Spartan') is a tree for the food garden. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. White flowers open in early to late spring and attract bees. The fruit is grown for fresh eating and juice, with sweet, crisp, juicy flesh. Raised by R. C. Palmer, it is easy to grow, but it can get canker in wetter regions.

Pairs well with Nodding onion, Western sword fern, Spanish bluebell, and Barberry.
