Notes

Sugar sumac (Rhus ovata) is a shrub for hedges and low maintenance gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 7, or down to 0°F (-18°C). This plant likes full sun to part shade and dry soil of most types. Only female plants produce flowers and berries, and birds feed on the berries. It sits low on the menu for deer. Colonies often form from one suckering parent, so give it room.

Pairs well with California brittlebush, Blue-eyed grass, and New Jersey tea.
