'Congabe' American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Congabe') is a shrub for hedges, privacy screens, specimen planting, and foundation beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, loamy or clay soil. It grows slowly and forms a dense, fragrant evergreen shape that adds winter interest. It sits low on the menu for deer. Birds visit it.
