'Ericoides' American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Ericoides') is a tree for specimen planting, hedges, rock gardens, and winter interest. It is hardy to USDA zone 2, or down to -50°F (-46°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist, loamy or clay soil. It grows slowly into a dense, fragrant evergreen that reaches 36 to 72 inches tall and wide. Deer tend to pass it by. Birds visit it too.
