Notes

'Harlem' oriental poppy (Papaver orientale 'Harlem') is a perennial for borders, cottage gardens, and cut flowers. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist soil of most types. Large, ruffled, rosy-red blooms with dark purple eyes rise above thistle-like foliage. It goes semi-dormant after flowering, so plant a low, mounding perennial in front to mask the bare spot. Deer and rabbits usually look elsewhere for a meal.

Pairs well with Iris, Ostfriesland sage, Lady's mantle, and Lupine.
