Notes

'Izu-no-hana' bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Izu-no-hana') is a shrub for shade gardens, cottage gardens, and cut flowers. It is hardy to USDA zone 6, or down to -10°F (-23°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to wet, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Blooms open in early to late summer and turn blue in acidic soils or deep pink in alkaline soils. Each lacecap has only 5 to 10 double-petaled sterile florets on long stalks, which gives an open, airy look. Deer rarely make it their first choice.

Pairs well with Praying Hands hosta, Aureola Japanese forest grass, Lady fern, and Lenten rose.
