Notes

Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) is a tree for specimen planting, hedges, and privacy screens. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Deer usually look elsewhere for a meal. It grows in a conical shape at a moderate pace, and it tolerates salt. The evergreen needles come in blue, brown/copper, and green tones.

Pairs well with Lenten rose, Ostrich fern, and Winter creeper.

Native range

Japan and southern China.
