Notes

Japanese pieris (Pieris japonica) is a shrub for borders, containers, specimen planting, and foundation plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full or part sun and average to moist, sandy or loamy soil. It is evergreen and slow growing, with fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies. It is not a favorite of deer, though hungry deer will eat almost anything. Acid soil suits it best.

Pairs well with Korean spice viburnum, Saucer magnolia, Autumn Frost hosta, and Blue fescue.

Native range

Japan, Taiwan, and east China.
