Notes

Maximilian sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani) is a perennial for borders, meadows, naturalized areas, and pollinator gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to wet soil of most types. Bees and butterflies visit the yellow blooms, and birds eat the seeds. Deer tend to browse other plants first. It can form large colonies, so give it room.

Pairs well with Pale purple coneflower, Little bluestem, and Blanket flower.

Native range

Missouri and Texas to southern Canada.
