'Pancake' American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Pancake') is a shrub for borders, containers, rock gardens, and foundation plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes full or part sun and dry to moist soil of most types. Deer tend to pass it by. It is a slow, dense evergreen that stays low and wide. The foliage is fragrant and gives winter interest, and birds visit it.
