Notes

'Purple King' dog's tooth violet (Erythronium dens-canis 'Purple King') is a perennial for borders and low-maintenance beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 3, or down to -40°F (-40°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and dry to moist soil of most types. Purple flowers open in early to late spring and attract bees. It is not a favorite of deer or rabbits, though hungry ones will eat almost anything. The plant goes dormant before summer, so set it near late-emerging perennials like hostas and toadlilies.

Pairs well with Fringed bleeding heart, Snowdrop, and Lenten rose.
