'Spartan' Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Spartan') is a tree for borders, hedges, specimen planting, and accents. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to average soil of most types. It grows in a tight cone shape, stays green all year, and tolerates drought and salt. Deer tend to pass it by. Plant it in a row for a tall, narrow screen.
Pairs well with Cat mint, Weigela, Buffalo grass, and Greig's tulip.
