'Zi Fan Qi Yu' tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa 'Zi Fan Qi Yu') is a shrub for borders, cut flowers, and perennial beds. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full or part sun, average moisture, and loamy soil. Fragrant, single, purplish-red flowers open in early to mid spring. Dark red flares mark the center of each bloom. The upright plant reaches about 80 cm at maturity, and its stems hold up well in wind.
Pairs well with Liberty hosta, Niobe clematis, and Garlic chives.
