Notes

'America' rhododendron (Rhododendron 'America') is an evergreen shrub for borders, specimen planting, and shade gardens. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes full sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy or loamy soil. Purplish-red flowers with dark red spotting open in early to late spring and draw hummingbirds, bees, and birds. It sits low on the menu for deer and rabbits. Give it room, since it grows 48 to 72 inches wide.

Pairs well with Japanese forest grass, Christmas fern, Coralbells, and Paperbark maple.
