Notes

'Beni-kaze' Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Beni-kaze') is a grass for shade gardens, woodland gardens, borders, and accents. It is hardy to USDA zone 5, or down to -20°F (-29°C). This plant likes part sun to full shade and average to moist, sandy or loamy soil. Deer tend to browse other plants first. It forms a flowing mound of green leaves that turn red in the fall, earlier and more dramatically than the normal species. The name means red wind, which suits its autumn look.

Pairs well with Earth Angel hosta, Christmas fern, and Lungwort.
