Notes

Japanese garden juniper (Juniperus procumbens) is a shrub for borders, rock gardens, ground cover, and foundation plantings. It is hardy to USDA zone 4, or down to -30°F (-34°C). This plant likes full sun and dry to average, sandy, loamy, or clay soil. It grows slowly into a low, horizontal mat of blue-green evergreen foliage that tolerates drought and salt. Deer rarely make it their first choice. Give it plenty of room, since it spreads far wider than it is tall.

Pairs well with Blue grama, Blue fescue, Poppy mallow, and Gladiator ornamental onion.

Native range

Southern Japan.
